SCS2025

Last week the 3rd National Meeting of the Swedish Chemical Society, SCS2025, took place. The conference was hosted in a wonderful venue at the Steam Hotel in beautiful Västerås. Our group was happy to participate in two oral and two poster presentations.

PhD students Louise Malm and Iris Hättestrand presented posters about their ongoing research. The poster of Louise focussed on the ionization efficiency of transformation products (TPs) and using parent compounds for quantification of TPs. Iris, on the other hand, presented her findings on structural annotation with generative models, in particular MSNovelist.

In one of the two analytical chemistry sessions, Henrik Hupatz presented his research on the sustainable design of chemical reagents for the sensitive detection of pesticides with machine learning. Henrik’s research has been funded through SUCCeSS, which also hosted three sessions dressing sustainability in chemical research and industry as well as a round table discussion “A Sustainable Swedish Chemistry Sector”.

In the analytical chemistry session, we were happy to finally hear Selina Tisler talk about her recent research on identifying chemicals migrating from plastic bottles. Selina was originally invited to the Analytical Chemistry and Materials mini-symposium last year, which was canceled and joined with analytical chemistry sessions in SCS2025.

Already last year (2024) I was honored with the “Silver” Berzelius Medal by the Swedish Mass Spectrometry Society (SMSS) in its yearly conference held at the Royal Swedish Academy. The Berzelius Silver medal is given for early-career contribution to SMSS and “is awarded to an individual early in his or her career (within the first 15 years of receiving the Ph.D.) in recognition of significant achievement that influenced Swedish basic or applied mass spectrometry.” In this year’s SCS I was honored to present some of our current and previous work to improve detection, prioritization, and identification of chemicals detected in complex samples. I am very thankful to SMSS and to past and present group members as well as collaborators with whom I have had a chance to work with over the years

A big thanks to the organizers for a smooth conference with a lot of exciting talks! We enjoyed meeting Swedish chemists and are looking forward to the next SCS!
